Abstract

Si les techniques de mobilisation électorale des maires « ruraux » se différencient de celles qui caractérisent les grandes villes, la périurbanisation engendre cependant des effets sur leur façon de « faire campagne ». Une enquête réalisée en Picardie lors des élections municipales de 2014 montre que celle-ci contraint effectivement les candidats à intégrer progressivement de nouveaux modes d’action dans leurs stratégies de campagne. S’opère dans les mondes ruraux une dépréciation tendancielle du travail personnalisé de démarchage électoral et, de manière concomitante, un glissement des types de légitimité mayorale. En effet, les candidats doivent désormais combiner la proximité avec les électeurs avec un registre de légitimation managériale en s’attachant à exclure les considérations partisanes. Ces changements qui s’effectuent à des rythmes et selon des intensités très variables résultent de l’évolution du profil social des populations et des prétendants au pouvoir municipal.
