Derrida's Unconditional Hospitality as the Improbable: An Example of Innovation in Refugee Care

Abstract: Objective I contend that City Plaza, a refugee‐run hotel in Athens, Greece has actually used socialist and anarchist political theories in an innovative way for our current global system by subverting the norms of the nation‐state with regard to refugee care. I am framing this argument by considering Derrida's discussion of unconditional and conditional hospitality. Methods The article is based on ethnographic research carried out in Athens during the summers from 2016–2019. Results I suggest that in its innov… Show more

“…Financial intermediaries provide funds to entrepreneurs to invent new products. The success of innovation is uncertain, once it got successful, generates funds and motivates further innovation (Chiovenda 2020; Redman 2020; Winecoff and Graff 2020). An economy with a poor economic base suffers from entrepreneurial activities and falls into a no‐economic activity trap.…”

“…Other more "philosophical" explorations of the concept of hospitality have also occurred (Still, 2004). For example, Derrida's query of hyperbolic unconditional hospitality, which assumes a timeless and unchanging aspect of hospitality, proffers the acceptance and embracing of the stranger without condition or question as a moral human imperative (Chiovenda, 2020;Lashley, 2008;Popke, 2007). “…Many researchers and academics visited City Plaza within the three and a half years it was operating: a fact that led in many cases to publications about the squat (Mitchell and Sparke 2018;Squire 2018;Tsavdaroglou 2018;Agustín and Jørgensen 2019;Raimondi 2019;Chiovenda 2020;Kiddey 2020;Fischer and Jørgensen 2021;Turam 2021). A common way of approaching City Plaza among these papers is a scheme that contrasts solidarity squats with the state-run spaces, like the camps.…”
