Dermoscopic feature analysis of different skin lesions in Langerhans cell histiocytosis

Abstract: Summary Dermoscopy was used to investigate skin lesions in 15 children with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). Purplish‐red globules or patches could be seen in different rashes under dermoscopy, and histopathology showed extravasation of red blood cells. The dermoscopy findings closely correlated with the histopathology results. Purplish‐red globules or patches could be useful as important dermoscopy features for the differential diagnosis of LCH.

“…10 Non-invasive examination would be helpful to prevent serious complications and improve the prognosis. 8 Among all the organs, LCH occurring in vulvar and nail was extremely rare for children, its dermoscopic and RCM features had been less investigated, meanwhile, nail LCH (NLCH) and vulvar LCH (VLCH) indicated the herald symptom of underlying multisystem disease. 11,12 We retrieved the papers in the fields of LCH, dermoscopy, and RCM from the NCBI, Web of Science, and Google of database, the dermatoscopic and RCM features of VLCH have less been investigated.…”

“…Because of the broad spectrum of clinical manifestations and the extreme diversity of disease, the differential diagnoses were extensive, which remained a diagnostic dilemma for the treating physician. In view of skin biopsy was an invasive examination approach, early diagnosis of LCH remained a diagnostic dilemma, 7 noninvasive examination identifying of cutaneous features of LCH lesions became important for the promptly diagnosis of LCH 8 . The previously published articles highlighted the clinical, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), and dermoscopy variability of LCH, 9 revealing different modality of skin lesions had certain commonalities, thus providing clinicians with more effective information that could help to select the best locations for biopsy, the biopsy should be performed for the diagnosis of LCH 10 .…”
