Dermoid Cysts: A Report of 75 Pediatric Patients

Abstract: Dermoid cysts (DCs) are benign cutaneous tumors that tend to persist and grow. The aim of this study was to examine the clinicopathologic features of congenital DCs. We present a case series of 75 children with a clinicopathologic diagnosis of DC. Seventy-two cysts were located on the head, one on the neck, and two on the trunk. Six cysts were located along the midline. Eight patients had symptoms other than changes in cyst size. Imaging studies were performed on 15 patients. Surgical excision was the primary … Show more

“…Dermoid cysts typically contain dermal skin appendages such as hair follicles, sweat glands, and, rarely, teeth, and grow by both desquamation and glandular secretions 2,3 . Dermoid cysts may occur in several locations including almost everywhere on the skin (particularly around the eyes), in the abdominal cavity and gonads, everywhere in the oropharyngeal cavity (particularly on the floor of the mouth), in the head and neck regions, in the spinal canal, and intracranially (most frequently in the posterior fossa, either within the vermis or in the fourth ventricle) 4,5 . Imaging is helpful to localize the cyst and suspected oropharyngeal mass lesions and in the differential diagnosis of children with respiratory distress secondary to a variety of lesions within the region of the skull base or pharynx.…”

“…Most of the articles available in this field are case reports, and their main focus is on the rare presentation of cysts . The goal of this study was evaluating the frequencies of mucocutaneous cysts according to variables like age, gender, location, lesions՚ duration, infection, and malignancy to help physicians prioritize their clinical diagnosis based on the most common presentation of cysts in the general population.…”
