“…DC of the jaw bone is exceedingly rare. Of the reported cases, six were in the mandible and two in the maxilla [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] . In all the reported jaw bone DC, mature sebaceous glands, with or without other dermal appendages, such as sweat glands or hair follicles, were scattered in the connective tissue layer of the cyst wall.…”

“… 3–8 Numerous fully mature sebaceous glands, with or without other dermal appendages, were widely scattered in the connective tissue layer of the cyst wall of all reported cases. Of these, the only dermal appendages found were the sebaceous glands in two cases, 4,5 sebaceous glands and sweat glands in one case, 3 sebaceous glands and hair follicles in one case, 6 and three skin appendages (sebaceous glands, hair follicles and sweat glands) in two cases 7,8 . The presence of sebaceous glands is an indispensable histological element with which to make a diagnosis of dermoid cyst; soft tissue dermoid cysts usually contain sebaceous glands, hair follicles, hairs, eccrine glands and, in about 20% of cases, apocrine glands 1…”

“…In the oral region, most dermoid cysts occur in the midline of the floor of the mouth where they may produce considerable swelling, and are located rarely in the mucosa of the cheek, lip and tongue. As judged from the paucity of case reports, it would appear that dermoid cysts of the jaw are exceedingly rare, and only six such cases have been documented 3–8 . The present report describes multiple microcysts showing histological characteristics of dermoid cysts in the segmentally resected mandibular bone, and possible pathological differences between intraosseous dermoid cysts and odontogenic developmental cysts with marked keratinization (odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC)).…”

“…Oral dermoid cysts commonly occur in the midline of the mouth floor, although they are found in other soft tissue locations occasionally (1) and in the jaw bone rarely. Only 15 cases were found in the literature and 4 of these were found in the mandible (2, 3) (Table 1). The present case is the fifth instance of a dermoid cyst with all three skin appendages occurring in the mandibular bone.…”
