Dermatophytes Isolated from the Mosques in Tokat, Turkey

Abstract: Dermatophytes are a group of fungi that invade keratinized tissues such as the skin, hair and nails. The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of the potential causative agents of dermatophytosis in the mosque area in Tokat, Turkey. Thirty mosques were included in the study. A total of two hundred samples were collected from various parts of carpets and slippers in the mosques. Positive cultures were obtained in 144 samples (113 from carpets, 31 from slippers). Among the species isolated, Epidermo… Show more

“…The most heavily contaminated homes harboured kittens ( n = 9). It is helpful to explain to owners that in people, dermatophytes have been isolated from environments frequented by people where transmission is believed to be a risk factor due to high levels of exposure, moisture and/or microtrauma: swimming pools, floors in athletic clubs, beaches, airports, podiatrists' offices, nail salons, places of worship, wrestling mats, hairdressing tools, shared shoes or slippers …”

“…T. rubrum is the most frequent causative agent worldwide, followed by T. interdigitale , E. floccosum , M. canis , T. verrucosum and T. tonsurans . The most common species in Iran and many parts of Middle East is T. interdigitale and T. rubrum , E. floccosum , T. tonsurans , M. canis and T. verrucosum are other common species . Accurate, precise and timely diagnosis of dermatophyte species is important for epidemiological studies as well as for defining antifungal treatment strategies .…”

“…Fungi belonging to the genera Trichophyton and Microsporum are most often isolated from clinical cases. However, the occurrence of Epidermophyton floccosum was less prevalent as compared to Trichophyton mentographytes and Trichophyton rubrum [ 12 ]. Despite the high incidence of dermatophyte infections, complete understanding of organism’s biology and research in this area is lacking because of lack of genetic tools available for such studies.…”
