Dermatophytes and dermatophytoses in the Milan area between 1970 and 1989

Abstract: Summary. Between 1970 and 1989 we examined 13 019 patients with dermatophytoses in the Milan area, Northern Italy. The results obtained during the 1980–89 period were compared with those obtained in the years 1970–79. From the data collected, tinea corporis emerged as the most frequently observed dermatophytosis, followed by tinea pedis and unguium. As far as dermatophytes are concerned, the dermatological pattern is dominated by Microsporum canis and Trichophyton rubrum. Other species, such as Epidemophyton … Show more

“…Trichophyton rubrum was also the most frequent cause of tinea manuum accounting for 51.9% of the isolates. This is in agreement with previous studies from Greece and other European countries and the USA 6,9,14,23 . Dry‐type lesions with intense scaling affecting the palms unilaterally were the most frequent form of the infection.…”

“…interdigitale (19.8%). Several studies have assessed the incidence of tinea corporis in the general population of different countries 9,10,14,19–23 . In these studies, tinea corporis accounted for 4.5–50.6% of all dermatophytoses and the aetiology obtained was very heterogeneous.…”

“…Anthropophilic dermatophytes and especially T. rubrum were also predominantly observed in other countries of Central 2-5 and Northern Europe 6 and North America. 7 Contrarily, in Mediterranean region 8,9 (except Greece) and Arabic countries, 10,11 zoophilic species like M. canis or T. verrucosum predominate. In some Middle East and North African regions, Trichophyton violaceum was the most often diagnosed.…”

“…Tinea infections caused by zoophilic dermatophytes are predominant in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean [1]. Infections are grouped according to the site of infection, such as tinea corporis (body) or tinea capitis (scalp) [2] and a common aetiological agent of tinea infection is Microsporum canis .…”
