Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the breast: A case study

Abstract: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a superficial mesenchymal neoplasm that originates from the dermal fibroblasts and tends to be locally aggressive. Although infrequent, it is one of the most common cutaneous sarcomas. It mainly affects young and middle-aged patients 20 to 50 years old. Any area of skin may be involved, but the most common sites of presentation are the trunk and extremities. DFSP of the breast is extremely rare. It classically presents as a nodular, exophytic, cutaneous mass, though in… Show more

“…Diagnosis of DFSP of the breast is challenging because it is rare and imitates a wide range of benign and malignant breast lesions 8. This is more challenging in paediatric patients regardless of the site of the lesion due to its heterogeneous histological characteristics in this specific cohort,9 as demonstrated in table 2.…”

“…DFSP is a superficial, low-grade soft tissue neoplasm that originates from the dermal fibroblasts and tends to be locally aggressive. The tumor is very uncommon in the breast [ 59 ]. The neoplasm presents diffuse infiltration of the dermis and subcutaneous fat and infrequently involves the glandular tissue.…”

“…Fully developed lesions can show the classic “juga” appearance, and some cases are excised as benign lesions 3,10 . The recommended treatment for DFSP is wide local excision with minimum 3‐cm margins, 11 insufficient resection (depth or width) of the residual tumor cells might lead to a high rate of relapse. In our patient, the tumor was highly active, the first operation and ultrasound examination suggested a clear boundary with no obvious infiltration.…”
