Dermal uptake of nicotine from air and clothing: Experimental verification

Abstract: This study aims to elucidate in greater detail the dermal uptake of nicotine from air or from nicotine-exposed clothes, which was demonstrated recently in a preliminary study. Six non-smoking participants were exposed to gaseous nicotine (between 236 and 304 μg/m ) over 5 hours while breathing clean air through a hood. Four of the participants wore only shorts and 2 wore a set of clean clothes. One week later, 2 of the bare-skinned participants were again exposed in the chamber, but they showered immediately a… Show more

“…Other studies have also measured a decrease in O 3 concentrations and the evolution of significant concentrations of squalene ozonolysis products in the gas-phase from clothing worn by people for several hours 20,[28][29][30] . In addition, recent experimental studies have shown that the extent of dermal uptake will be influenced significantly by clothing [31][32][33][34][35][36][37] and dermal uptake of species such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and phthalates is similar or larger than inhalation intake 38,39 . Clean clothing can reduce the concentration of species being absorbed into the skin by acting as a protective barrier, whereas clothing which has had time to absorb these compounds from the gas phase before being worn may act as a source of the compound, leading to an increase of dermal uptake compared to bare skin 32,33,36 .…”

“…Es wurde demonstriert, dass saubere Kleidung die Exposition mit SVOCs in der Gasphase verringert, während kontaminierte Kleidung die Aufnahme von SVOCs aus der Gasphase verstärken kann . In beiden Fällen sind die Auswirkungen von Kleidung groß, wenn der SVOC‐Verteilungskoeffizient zwischen Kleidung und Luft groß ist.…”
