Dermal toxicity studies of technical polychlorinated biphenyls and fractions thereof in rabbits

Abstract: A significant difference in toxicity between 3 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) preparations was found in a prior study: Clophen A 60 and Phenoclor DP6 showing the highest, Aroclor 1260 the lowest, toxicity . A subsequent study revealed the presence of tetra-and pentachlorodibenzofuran in Phenoclor and Clophen . In the present study, application of 118 mg of the 3 PCB's (5 times per wk, for 38 days) on the back skin of rabbits also resulted in differences in toxicity.PCB-induced skin lesions were hyperplasia and… Show more

“…Pathologic changes in the livers of the treated animals were, in general, the same as described in a previous study (Vos and Beems, 1971). These findings included centrolobular degeneration and liver cell atrophy, focal hyalin degeneration of the cytoplasm of hepatocytes, enlarged nuclei and loss of glycogen.…”

“…The lesions were not yet so pronounced as in the prior study (Vos and Beems, 1971). Hexachlorobiphenyl induced skin damage, especially hyperplasia in the epidermal and folhcular epithelium as well as follicular plugging, was clearly less when compared with the Aroclor@ treated rabbits.…”
