Derivation of wild vegetation cover density in semi-arid regions: ERS2/SAR evaluation

Abstract: In this paper, a simple model is proposed for measuring the vegetation cover over soil surfaces from radar signals acquired in semi-arid regions. In such regions, vegetation is characterized by the presence of clumps which partially cover the soil surface. The proposed model describes the relationship between the percentage of covered surface and the measured radar signal. Model simulations over Tunisian test areas, where ground parameters are controlled, are performed and compared with actual ERS2 radar measu… Show more

“…where a is an empirical constant (cm/d), LAI is the leaf area index (m 2 /m 2 ), and b is the surface cover fraction (SCF) derived from MODIS imagery (MOD13A1) using the dimidiate pixel model (Zribi et al, 2003). According to previous canopy interception studies in similar environments (Cheng et al, 2009 andWang et al, 2012), a was set as 0.5 cm/d.…”

“…So, the methods of estimating vegetation fraction are the hottest research topics in different scientific fields. The quantitative estimation means of vegetation fraction have mainly experienced two stages such as ground measurement [8] [9] [10] and quantitative inversion based on multisource remote sensing images [11]- [17] . Three stages such as visual estimation method, probability calculation method and instrument measurement method are included in the ground measurement methods.…”

“…Remote sensing data is relatively easy to access and time-efficient. The vegetation indices derived from remote sensing images, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), are commonly used to retrieve vegetation coverage (Zribi et al, 2003;Leprieur et al, 1994). This is more reliable than simulation methods to determine the hydrological condition of the vegetation in the Loess Plateau.…”
