Show more

“…Interpretations such as those by Wegener and Holmes implied an originally close, 'pre-drift', spatial association between islands such as South Georgia and the southern extremity of South America. Wilckens (1933) noted the broad similarity between the rocks of South Georgia and those of Tierra del Fuego, and Kranck (1932), after working in Tierra del Fuego and establishing the Yahgan Formation on Navarino Island, correlated the lithostratigraphy of that formation with the succession described by Ferguson (1915) from South Georgia. Although the details of Ferguson's stratigraphy had been challenged, Kranck's overall correlation of sedimentary lithologies, with similar Mesozoic ages, was sound.…”

“…These, together with Holtedahl's collection, were formally described by Wilckens (1932Wilckens ( , 1937 as being undoubtedly Early Cretaceous in age. Wilckens (1933) also attempted to integrate the geology of South Georgia into the broader pattern of the Scotia Arc, stressing that correlation with Tierra del Fuego was more likely than the links with the South Orkney Islands favoured by Pirie (1913) and Tyrrell (1915).…”

“…Both units present features typical of classical European flysch, with evenly stratified alternations of sandstones and slaty mudstones, graded-and crossbedding (SuAREZ & PETTIGREW, 1976). On Annenkov Island, off the SW coast, WILCKENS (1988WILCKENS ( , 1947 described fossils, chiefly Ammonoidea, Bivalvia and Itadiolaria, also trace fossils, as well as smaller collections from the main island where fossils are much rarer. Determinations of the Annenkov specimens led WmCKENS to propose an Aptian age, and presumably also for the main island.…”
