“…The aim of this study was to assess the significance of placental calcification of the type and degree that is easily noted during routine clinical and pathological practice, and hence only simple methods of examination were utilized. It has been pointed out (Einbrodt, Geller and Born, 1962) that chemical analysis of the placenta estimates not only the easily visible or "dystrophic" calcification (Schonig, 1928), but also the structural calcium of the tissues, the calcium of the intracellular fluid and transport calcium en route from mother to foetus. Such a technique is therefore not suitable for the purpose of detecting the significance of visible calcium.…”
