The Neudarss cuspate foreland is one of the largest beach ridge plains in Europe. It comprises about 140 beach ridges which can be divided into eight ridge sets from morphological criteria, trends in course and advance as well as erosional discontinuities. The reconstruction of the foreland's evolution is based on the dating of 33 samples from 14 sites by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and three additional datings on the basis of historical maps and aerial images. The derived progradation model shows variations in the progradation rate which are consistent with past climate and sea‐level changes. Cool (warm) periods correlate with decreased (increased) progradation rates. Both area and volume growth of the ridge sets vary in the same direction. We conclude that the progradation rate is predominantly controlled by the sediment supply which in turn depends on sea‐level variations and wind‐driven wave action. The development of the plain's relief during the last 1000 years is compared with detailed climate parameter reconstructions. The Medieval Warm Period and several phases of the Little Ice Age can clearly be traced in the morphology, thus allowing conclusions concerning predominant wind direction and aeolian activity also on smaller time scales. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

On the causes for salinity variations in the Baltic Sea during the last 8500 years

[1] The Baltic Sea became connected to the open sea about 8500 years B.P., and that marked the beginning of the still continuing Litorina Sea stage. There have since been significant long-term variations of the salinity from a maximum of some 10-15% to the present of 7-8%. The salinity variations have been known since the beginning of the twentieth century, and various mechanisms have been proposed to explain these. However, so far, no one has actually tried to quantify and thereby rank the relative importance of the different proposed mechanisms. In this paper we used a simple oceanographic model to quantify the impact of changes in crosssectional areas of the inlets to the Baltic. We found that such changes cannot explain the full variation of the salinity. We propose that the remaining salinity variations (0.5-5%) are explained by changes in net freshwater input in the range 15-60%. The calculated variations in the freshwater supply are in large coherent with known variations of the northern European climate. We show that other possible factors as increased mixing, frontal displacements, higher deep water salinity, and larger depths in Kattegat and larger oscillating flows across the sills due to increased sea level variability are less likely to have made substantial contributions to the salinity variations in the Baltic Sea.

Abstract. Jüngere Pegeldaten aus dem nordostdeutschen Ostsee-Küstenraum legen nahe, dass die eustatische Komponente der gegenwärtigen Meeresspiegeländerung überlagert wird durch eine räumlich differenzierte nicht-eustatische, insbesondere glazial- isostatisch, Komponente. Um zu untersuchen, in welchem Maße die frühere Meeresspiegelentwicklung durch diese beiden Komponenten beeinflusst wurde, wurde versucht, diese so weit zurück zu verfolgen, wie dies die Mächtigkeit der marinen Küstensedimentfolgen erlaubte. Drei neue relative Meeresspiegelkurven wurden abgeleitet, wovon zwei hier zum ersten Mal präsentiert werden. Die Kurven basieren auf zahlreichen AMS-Radiokohlenstoff-Datierungen von Meeresspiegel-Indexpunkten wie Basistorfen, archäologischen Unterwasserfunden und Torfprofilen aus Küstenüberflutungsmooren. Obwohl der Indikationswert der Proben aus den Küstenmooren wegen deren möglicher Kompaktion fraglich ist, konnten zuverlässige Angaben durch den Abgleich von Daten aus unterschiedlichen Ablagerungsräumen gewonnen werden. Die drei abgeleiteten Meeresspiegelkurven überdecken den Zeitraum von 6000 bis 7000 v. Chr. bis zur Gegenwart und divergieren gleichmäßig mit zunehmendem Alter. Ein Uferlinienverschiebungsdiagramm zeigt, dass tektonische Ereignisse dieses räumliche Bewegungsmuster nicht signifikant beeinflusst haben. Für die Bestimmung der isostatischen Komponente wurden die Meeresspiegelkurven verglichen mit einer von Denys/Baeteman (1995) publizierten Kurve für die belgische Küste, die als tektonisch und isostatisch stabiler gilt. Der Verlauf dieser Kurve wird daher hauptsächlich von der eustatischen Komponente bestimmt. Der Vergleich legt nahe, dass der SW-Abschnitt der deutschen Ostseeküste gegenwärtig eine leichte Submergenz aufweist, möglicherweise infolge eines sich rückbildenden, glazial bedingten Randwulstes. Im zentralen Abschnitt ist die isostatische Bewegung vor wenigen Tausend Jahren ausgeklungen, im nördlichen Abschnitt hält sie dagegen immer noch an. Hier beträgt die maximale Hebung während der letzten 9000 Jahre etwa 6 m relativ zur belgischen Küste.
