Depyrogenation using plasmas: A novel approach for endotoxin deactivation using a dielectric barrier discharge at atmospheric pressure

Abstract: Developing a low‐cost depyrogenation process is vital in extending the medical applicability of polymers that can be used in medicine. We present an overview of the plasma‐based depyrogenation literature and address the need to develop a nonthermal plasma‐based depyrogenation process for delicate materials such as chitosan. We present a low‐cost plasma apparatus to treat chitosan powder in hermetically sealed bags. We decouple the experiments into two parts: depyrogenation experiments for dried standard endoto… Show more

“…A comparison between the results proved that plasma jet can be more rapid in disinfection of P. aeruginosa 42 with no additional harm or side effects on normal cells in rat models 46 . Cold plasma has also been widely used for decontamination and detoxi cation [47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55] . CAP strategies have been hopefully successful at disinfection of P. aeruginosa but the detoxi cation of its toxin has been disregarded so far.…”
