“…The questioning prompts drawn from Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) (Housen, 2002) aim to foster aesthetic development, reflective observation and empathetic understandings through careful and collaborative viewing of the fine art portraiture. The power of using photographic portraits and VTS strategies was twofold: first to create an aesthetic contrast from the diagnostic clinical language with visual symbols and lay language that is grounded in lived experiences of BPD; second, was to draw from previous Depth of Field research (Brand et al, 2016) that deliberately juxtaposes photographs and consumer narrative in a way that either affirms or challenges existing mis/understandings around stigmatized patient groups.
