Depth edge detection by image-based smoothing and morphological operations

Abstract: Since 3D measurement technologies have been widely used in manufacturing industries edge detection in a depth image plays an important role in computer vision applications. In this paper, we have proposed an edge detection process in a depth image based on the image based smoothing and morphological operations. In this method we have used the principle of Median filtering, which has a renowned feature for edge preservation properties. The edge detection was done based on Canny Edge detection principle and was … Show more

“…The median filter can retain a large amount of detailed information about the target feature, will not make the target edge appear to blur, and has a significant effect on random discrete noise suppression. 29 There are several popular typical image segmentation methods, 30,31 including threshold-based segmentation methods, edge-based segmentation methods, morphology-based segmentation methods, and region-based segmentation methods.…”

“…The shape of features in an image is typically the focus of morphological operation. It has been applied to eliminate defects in a variety of shapes with the purpose of smoothing the contours and preserving the object's size and shape [33]. Erosion and dilation are the two main operations.…”

“…In order to extract depth silhouettes, first, threshold-based segmentation [72] is used to obtain a binary image from the original image. These segmented images are closed morphologically using binary dilation followed by a binary erosion operation [73]. Thus, binary dilation works through adding pixels to human edges while erosion works by removing boundary pixels.…”
