“…To determine initial and final total DIC content, we injected 1.0 ml of the water into 5 ml of 1 N HCl through which an N, airstream bubbled and stripped the CO, for analysis by a Beckman 215B infrared gas analyzer. od (Adams et al 1974) for incubation periods of 0.75-1.5 h only by the direct determination of total DIC as described above. Total DIC determined directly with the gas analyzer was not identical to but was well correlated with DIC calculated from pH and alkalinity (r = 0.99 from linear regression: Titus 1977).…”

“…Subsamples (ca. 10 mg) were combusted in pure oxygen and the evolved mixture of [14C]C0, and CO, trapped by sparging with N, through ethanolamine (Adams et al 1974). Portions (0.2 ml) of the cthanolamine containing entrapped 14C were pipetted into vials with liquid scintillation solution (Bray 1960) and counted in a scintillation counter (Traccrlab).…”

“…commun.). Several morphological and physiological strategies, such as canopy building [8], nutrient removal from open water [9], heavy vegetative spread by autofragmentation and low light-and CO2-compensation points I-5] are proposed for its highly competitive strength. Allelopathically active phenolic compounds from this macrophyte were thought to be involved in the interaction with cyanobacteria and chlorophytes 1-101 but until now no active compound had been identified.…”
