Depressive symptoms of female nursing staff working in stressful environments and their association with serum creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase – a preliminary study

Abstract: BackgroundThe activity of creatine kinase (CK) in serum has recently been reported to be potentially associated with several types of depression. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether serum enzymes, including CK, vary even in a healthy population with depressive symptoms caused by work-related stress. We gave questionnaires and blood examinations to 93 healthy female nursing home workers and did an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the quantitative detection of CK isozyme muscle-type M chain (CK-MM)… Show more

“…However, it had been claimed that the decrease of LDH had no clinical significance until it was found to decrease in psychological depression ( 33 ). There still has been reported that LDH might be dropped within people who presented the depressive symptoms when working in stressful environments ( 34 ). In our study, we have already noticed the patients’ psychological situation and the corresponding psychotherapy could influence the recovery.…”

“…CK is an important enzyme that catalyses the reversible phosphorylation of ATP and creatine to ADP and phosphocreatine in cellular energy metabolism 15 , 16 . CK is present as three isoenzymes: CK-MB (mostly in the heart), CK-MM (mostly in the muscle), or CK-BB (mostly in the brain) 17 .…”

“…It is responsible for the conversion of lactic acid to pyruvic acid, an important step in the production of cellular energy ( 39 ). Kato et al found that healthy nurses' depressive symptoms shown on CES-D under the stressful conditions were significantly negatively correlations with lactate dehydrogenase activities ( r = −0.29, p = 0.0065) ( 40 ). We observed that patients with both diabetes mellitus and depression had lower concentrations of lactic dehydrogenase compared to those with diabetes alone.…”
