Depressive symptoms in Asian TMD patients and their association with non‐specific physical symptoms reporting

Abstract: The prevalence of depressive symptoms and NPSs was lower in Asian TMD patients. Psychological distress experienced by female Asian TMD patients was comparable to their male counterparts. Results also suggest that depressive symptomatology is associated with the reporting of multiple NPSs.

“…This study found that there was no significant difference between the sexes with regard to depression. This is in accordance with studies which also used the RDC/TMD for diagnosing TMDs and the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) for depression screening, 59,60 or the HADS. 48 In contrast, Auerbach et al, by using Laskin's criteria for diagnosing TMD and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), found that female TMD patients were significantly more depressed than males.…”

“…Statistically, in this study, no significant differences in depression, pain severity, or NSPS were found between the groups. In past studies, TMD patients were found to have higher depression and somatization scores by up to 43% and 60% . In some previous studies, the level of depression and somatization did not differ among TMD subgroups .…”

“…Psychological profiles of TMD patients have been the targets of several studies. Some earlier studies found higher somatization and depression scores in TMD patients . Regarding TMD subgroups such as myofacial pain, disc displacement, and arthritis, some authors have also found significant psychological differences among the subgroups .…”
