Depressive Symptoms, Fatigue and Social Relationships Influenced Physical Activity in Frail Older Community-Dwellers during the Spanish Lockdown due to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: Due to the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Spain underwent a strict lockdown (March–May 2020). How the lockdown modified older adults’ physical activity (PA) has been poorly described. This research assesses the effect of the lockdown on PA levels and identifies predictors of sufficient/insufficient PA in frail older community-dwellers. Community-dwelling participants from the +ÀGIL Barcelona frailty intervention program, suspended during the pandemic, underwent a phone-assessment during the lockdown… Show more

“…Up to now, little is known about the impact of home confinement caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on PA and SB of older adults. Besides, the few studies that exist on this topic have been carried out with subjective methods as questionnaires or surveys [ 2 , 26 ]. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to objectively evaluate the differences in PA, SB, and break of sedentary time (BST) between the situation prior to COVID-19 pandemic, HC, and the phase-0 of the deescalation, analysing the effectiveness of an unsupervised home-based exercise routine to combat the potential increase in SB during the periods within the pandemic.…”

“…The amount of daily movement and leg muscle strength in the QCL decreased significantly with frailty in all participants. Physical activity decreased during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic as reported in a study that used a semi-structured phone interview for community-dwelling older adults in Spain ( Pérez, 2021 ). In the Netherlands, a decline in self-reported physical activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic was reported by nearly 50% of older adults ( Visser, 2020 ).…”

“…During the two time-points for baseline and follow-up assessments, the COVID-19 countermeasures were enforced on people in Japan. Among the community-dwelling older adults, physical activity decreased during the lockdown in Spain [ 14 ]. In Japan, where self-restraint was enforced instead of a lockdown, physical activity decreased compared to the period before the COVID-19 pandemic [ 15 ].…”
