The core objective of the research was to analyze the association between job stress and burnout among university teachers. It has been observed that stress and burnout is the natural phenomenon present in every working place, particularly among university teachers. Therefore a quantitative survey was conducted to determine whether stress and burnout are related and the impact of social support and gender differences on the relationship. For statistical analysis, teachers from four public universities in Lahore city were taken as samples. Survey questionnaires were distributed among 400 teachers through stratified random sampling. The results show that stress and burnout are positively correlated, but social support can mediate in reducing the stress to burnout relationship. Social support as a moderator plays a vital role in suppressing the pressure build-up among the teachers due to job stress and burnout. This study might be beneficial for teachers in understanding the consequences of stress and the importance of social support from university and family. This study might help retain work-life balance among teachers.

Purpose Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by functionally impairing levels of inattention and/or hyperactive-impulsive behavior. It affects 3% to 5% of adults. This perspective piece aims to highlight the occurrence of ADHD in medical learners and physicians, including its reported prevalence in these groups, why reported rates may reflect underestimates, consequences of untreated symptoms, and a potentially helpful innovative educational tool to assist these individuals with a critical aspect of medical training and practice. Results Despite recent attention being paid to concerning levels of depression, anxiety, and burnout in medical learners and physicians, comparatively little attention has been devoted to the occurrence of ADHD in these groups. Reported rates of ADHD in medical learners and physicians, though low compared to rates of other mental health conditions and compared to rates of ADHD in the general population, may represent underestimates for a variety of reasons. The consequences of untreated ADHD symptoms are likely numerous and significant for these groups. Research has shown that about half of adults with ADHD discontinue prescribed treatment (stimulant medication) over time due to lack of perceived effectiveness, highlighting the need for durable, effective interventions to help medical learners and physicians with ADHD during and after their training. An innovative educational tool to assist medical learners and physicians with ADHD with a critical facet of their training and practice – the reading of scientific articles – is proposed, including a description of the tool, rationale for its design, practical considerations around implementation, and proposed directions for future research. Conclusion Untreated ADHD in medical learners and physicians may have numerous and significant consequences that can adversely impact training, practice, and ultimately patient care. These challenges warrant proper support for medical learners and physicians with ADHD via evidence-based treatments, program-based accommodations, and innovative educational tools.

Purpose Burnout is an occupational stress syndrome that gives rise to emotional exhaustion (EE) depersonalization (DP) and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). Increasing rates of burnout among health care professionals has been reported globally. Saudi Arabia appears to be among the highest in prevalence with reports of higher than 70%. Medical residents in training are the highest group at risk. The literature has repeatedly linked burnout among residents with poor academic performance on training exams, impaired quality of life, career choice regret and intentions to abandon medicine. In this study, we explore the factors that contribute to resident burnout, their experiences with burnout and how they choose to mitigate it. Methods A qualitative design was used to conduct this study in the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A total of 14 residents from surgical and non-surgical programs were interviewed through in-depth interviews. Interpretive thematic analysis was used in coding and generated coding templates. Categories were repetitively reviewed and revised, expanding to include new data as it emerged and collapsing to remove redundant codes. Categories were organized into the final themes and sub-themes. Results All participants demonstrated a shared thread of shame in reaching the level of burnout. Three main interlinked themes were identified: Burnout stigma cycle, amalgamated causes of burnout and self-coping with burnout. One of the concerning findings in our study is the participants’ pursuit of self-coping strategies and the avoidance of formal help, creating a cycle of suffering in silence. Conclusion The literature has repeatedly reported high levels of burnout among residents in training. This study has added another dimension to those findings through the exploration of residents actual accounts and appears to link burnout with suboptimal training and working conditions. We have highlighted the pivotal role stigma and shame play in completely preventing residents from seeking professional help.
