Depression, sexuality and fibromyalgia syndrome: clinical findings and correlation to hematological parameters

Abstract: Fibromyalgia (FM) is characterized by chronic pain and comorbidities. Objective To investigate sexuality and depression in women with FM compared with controls and to correlate the findings with hematological parameters. Methods 33 women with FM and 19 healthy women were included and evaluated with the following instruments: Female Sexual Function Index, Beck Inventory, Visual Analogue Scale, medical history and laboratory exams. Results The prevalence of sexual dysfunction (P = 0.007) and depression (P … Show more

“…Some studies concur with our results, recording higher platelet counts in FM patients than in healthy subjects (Elmas et al, 2016). Others, however, have found no significant differences (Alves et al, 2016; Arihan et al, 2017; Haliloğlu et al, 2014). Researchers have also reported elevated platelet activity in patients with FM (Milovanovic et al, 2016) and with chronic fatigue syndrome and/or FM versus healthy subjects (Berg et al, 1999).…”

“…Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate thrombosis-related parameters in FM patients, including blood-coagulation parameters, platelet indices, and RBC count. The few previous studies conducted in this area have reported conflicting results regarding these parameters in patients with FM in comparison to healthy subjects (Aktürk & Büyükavci, 2017;Alves et al, 2016;Arihan, Caglayan, Bayrak, Akinci, & Falkmarken, 2017;Berg, Berg, Couvaras, & Harrison, 1999;Elmas et al, 2016;Haliloglu, Carlioglu, Sahiner, Karaaslan, & Kosar, 2014;Milovanovic et al, 2016). Given the association between thrombosis and inflammation, we also evaluated the inflammatory markers neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-tolymphocyte ratio (PLR; Uslu et al, 2015) as thrombosisrelated parameters.…”

“…This may be due to psychiatric comorbidity and sexual dysfunction in women with FMS. [32,33] There was a deviation of FMS group from MPS and healthy controls both in terms of medical and psychiatric history. Approximately 85% of the patients with FMS were diagnosed with any mood or anxiety disorder.…”

“…A review of the literature revealed only two clinical studies investigating RDW values in patients with FMS, the first of which found no significant difference in the RDW values of patients with FMS and healthy individuals 15 . In another study, Alves et al 29 found no significant difference between the RDW values of patients with FMS and healthy individuals. In the present study, no significant difference was noted in the RDW values of patients with FMS and healthy individuals.…”
