Turner syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects only females and is caused by the loss of the whole or a part of the X-chromosome. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life and frequency of anxiety and depression in a cohort of Egyptian children with Turner Syndrome (TS) diagnosed in Assiut university hospitals, Assiut, Egypt. In a case-control study; 40 females with Turner Syndrome (TS), aged 6-16 years, diagnosed in Assiut university hospitals, Upper Egypt, were compared to 40 agematched apparent healthy girls as controls. They were subjected to full history taking, thorough clinical examination and assessment of pediatric quality of life; we used pediatric anxiety and depression scores. For cognitive assessment, Health-Related Quality of Life (HR-QOL) and psychological evaluation of anxiety and depression; we used the "Children Depression Scale" (CDI), "Children Anxiety Scale" Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) and SF-36 by trained psychiatrists blind to the study. Our study revealed Children Anxiety Scale scores ranged from 13-41 for patients with TS and 5-23 for controls. The mean anxiety scores were significantly higher in TS patients as compared to controls (p<0.001), (27.32±7.1 versus 15.2±2.9). In addition, we found CDI scores ranged from 38-70 for patients and 31-56 for controls. Mean depression scores were significantly higher in TS patients as compared to controls (p<0.001), (54.7±8.8 versus 36.8±9.9). The physical and mental component summary scores of HR-QOL were lower in TS patients when compared to controls. We concluded that female children with TS experience significant problems with HR-QOL, anxiety and depression, which need thorough psychiatric evaluation and rapid intervention of these patients.

Noonan syndrome (NS) and Turner syndrome (TS) are associated with cognitive problems and difficulties in affective information processing. While both phenotypes include short stature, facial dysmorphisms, and a webbed neck, genetic etiology and neuropsychological phenotype differ significantly. The present study examines putative differences in affective information processing and social assertiveness between adult women with NS and TS. Twenty-six women with NS, 40 women with TS, and 40 female controls were matched on age and intelligence, and subsequently compared on (1) alexithymia, measured by the Bermond-Vorst Alexithymia Questionnaire, (2) emotion perception, evaluated by the Emotion Recognition Task, and (3) social assertiveness and social discomfort, assessed by the Scale for Interpersonal Behavior. Women with TS showed higher levels of alexithymia than women with NS and controls (P-values < 0.001), whereas women with NS had more trouble recognizing angry facial expressions in comparison with controls (P = 0.01). No significant group differences were found for the frequency of social assertiveness and the level of social discomfort. Women with NS and TS demonstrated different patterns of impairment in affective information processing, in terms of alexithymia and emotion perception. The present findings suggest neuropsychological phenotyping to be helpful for the diagnosis of specific cognitive-affective deficits in genetic syndromes, for the enhancement of genetic counseling, and for the development of personalized treatment plans.

Turner syndrome (TS), caused by complete or partial loss of the second sex chromosome, is associated with complex medical manifestations. The TS community identifies anxiety as a major contributor to reduced quality of life. The study aimed to improve understanding of anxiety symptomatology, diagnosis, and care in individuals with TS. A mixed methods design integrated community engagement, including community leaders as co‐investigators and a community advisory board, an online survey (N = 135), and in‐depth interviews (N = 10). The majority of respondents reported that anxiety symptoms occur two or more days per week, with self‐advocates reporting more frequent symptoms than caregivers (p = 0.03). Self‐advocates reported feeling anxious more often at school/work; both rater groups reported anxiety‐related behaviors were most likely to be expressed at home. Insomnia was the most common symptom of anxiety endorsed across age and rater groups (>70%). Anxiety symptoms and triggers changed with age and often were undiagnosed or untreated during childhood. Therapy and medication were reported as helpful by most respondents who had tried these strategies. Qualitative themes included: ‘Triggers for anxiety are related to TS’, ‘Anxiety impacts the whole family’, and ‘Opportunities for early identification and intervention’.
