Depression in relation to purpose in life among a very old population: A five-year follow-up study

Abstract: The results show a significant inverse relationship between purpose in life and depression in the cross-sectional study; however, a high PIL score does not seem to serve very old people as a protection against the risk of developing depression.

“…According to Frankl (1959) and Yalom (1980), the feeling that life has a meaning or purpose prevents an individual from experiencing meaninglessness. Purpose in life is considered to be closely associated with mood and well-being (King, Hicks, Krull, & Del Gaiso, 2006;Guzewicz, Steuden & Szymona-Pałkowska, 2014) and has been proven to act as a countermeasure against depression (Hedberg, Gustafson, Alex, & Brulin, 2010). This allows us to assume that workaholism is related to low purpose in life.…”

“…Purpose in life has been associated with a positive view of life, happiness, self-esteem, and religion and spirituality (Ardelt, 2003;van Leeuwen et al, 2007). Despite this, a high purpose in life does not seem to serve very old people as a protection against the risk of developing depression (Hedberg, Gustafson, Ale´x, & Brulin, 2010). Experiencing purpose in life for very old women was to reach beyond oneself in relation to psychological well-being, social relations, and physical and psychological symptoms .…”
