Depression in Belgian first‐year university students: A longitudinal study of self‐definition, interpersonal relatedness, mentalizing, and integration

Abstract: Despite evidence of increasing prevalence of depression in university students, few studies investigated how depression evolves over the first months at university. We investigate severity of depression among first-year university students during their first semester at university, and whether it was associated with impairments in personality, mentalizing (or reflective functioning), and social and academic integration. Participants in this twowave prospective study were 377 Belgian first-year students in 2018… Show more

“…Additionally, academicians have considered academic performance as a direct link to behavior, psychology and social spectacle (Chen 2005;Bhandarkar et al, 2021). Socialization and academics are regarded as same for school adjustment (Rienties et al, 2012;Coninck et al, 2021), future outcomes (Bhandarkar et al, 2021), future jobs performance (Sonny & Sherman, 1989;Abbasi et al, 2021). Positive schooling results in shape of the best academic performance (Marks, 2010), rational performance or life adjustment (Crede, et al, 2015), and overall living standard (Hascher & Hagenauer, 2020;Nordlander & Stensöta, 2014).…”

“…Depressive Mood was assessed by the eight-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D8), which is a simplified version of the CES-D20 scale [38][39][40]. In the CES-D8 scale, participants were asked: "Did you experience any of the listed situations for last week", which includes (1) feeling depressed, (2) feeling strenuous to do anything, (3) suffering from insomnia or hypersomnia symptoms, (4) feeling pleasant, (5) feeling lonely, (6) feeling happy, (7) feeling sad, (8) feeling inability to continue life.…”

“…The RFQ-8 has been extensively used to assess RF in research aimed at (a) defining its dysfunction (usually hypomentalization) in groups of patients or other populations [ 39 47 ], and how it mediates symptomatic expression [ 35 , 48 67 ]; (b) assessing change in psychotherapy [ 68 75 ]; and (c) understanding the relationship of RF to attachment and parenting [ 27 , 60 , 76 79 ]. Surprisingly, much of this research [ 27 , 43 48 , 50 , 52 , 53 , 57 , 59 68 , 71 , 77 ] suggest that higher RFQc scores may indicate more appropriate mentalization [ 51 , 68 ], perhaps reflecting confidence in mental states as valid explanations for emotional experiences and behaviors [ 48 ].…”
