“…With regard to the total population of the older in both studies, depression rates are probably underestimated, since residents in rest homes and hospital were excluded. Three previous researches studied the depression problem in older people in Mainland China (Gao et al, 2009;Lai et al, 2010;Wen et al, 2010). Gao et al adopted the 30-item GDS to explore the depression symptoms in rural older people, and reported that the depression prevalence was 30.8%.…”

“…In developed countries, prevalence for depression in older people has been found to range between 7% and 36% in out-patients and to be close to 40% in hospitalized patients (Gallo and Lebowitz, 1999).was 21.7% (Garcia-Pena et al, 2008). In Mainland China, the growth of the aging people has led to research interest in depression in older people Gao et al, 2009;Lai et al, 2010;Wen et al, 2010). The published studies of depression prevalence in older people in Mainland China showed much variation in the results, varying between 3.86% and 30.8% Gao et al, 2009;Lai et al, 2010;Wen et al, 2010).…”

“…Epidemiological studies have also shown that socio-demographic factors, smoking and obesity lose their importance in predicting mortality in those over 90, being replaced by disability level, physical and cognitive performance (Nybo et al 2003). Nonagenarians and centerians are therefore often grouped together in studies of ageing (Ravaglia et al 1997;Wen et al 2010), yet they have not been much studied in terms of treatments offered or tolerance of psychotropic medication. The prevalence of dementia in nonagenarians lies in the range of 25-54% (Carrillo-Alcala & Bermejo-Pareja, 2008;Peltz et al 2011).…”
