The world's population has been evolving rapidly; every country in the world is facing this drastic progression in the number and the percentage of the elderly in their net population. As the chronological age advances, physiological and psychosocial decline will be evident among all older adults. The potentially relevant literature was identified using appropriate search terms in electronic databases such as PubMed MEDLINE, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science, CINAHL, IndMed, and Google Scholar. Articles published from 2006 to 2019, reported the prevalence and the risk factors for depression among older adults living in the community, old age homes, or hospitals of the South Asian countries. Articles were published in the languages other than English and those reporting the categorised or mean depressive scores were excluded from the review. After quality check for all the retrieved articles from different databases, 120 articles were included for the meta‐analysis. The data were extracted based on a validated data extraction form, and the reviewer contacted the authors for clarification of the missing data whenever required. The estimates were pooled using the random effect model for meta‐analyses. Sub‐group and sensitivity analyses were also performed. The overall pooled estimate (random effect models) of the prevalence of depression among the elderly was 42.0% (95% CI: 0.38–0.46), Chi‐squared P‐value <0.001, and I2 99.14%. The pooled estimate of the prevalence was higher in the community settings than the old age homes (44.0%; 95% CI: 39.0–49.0 vs. 42.0%; 95% CI: 34.0–49.0). Depression is a common problem among the elderly population and the pooled estimate of depression would give directions to the healthcare providers, policymakers, and future researchers to plan some measures (either pharmacological or non‐pharmacological interventions) to effectively tackle the burden of geriatric depression in the future.

Introduction: Depression is common in late life. Sri Lankan studies on depression in community living elderly are scarce. A sample of community living older people was assessed for presence of depressive symptoms. Methods:Randomly selected 300 people aged above 50 years from Bope-Poddala MOH area who were not diagnosed with neurological illness, major psychiatric illness and not having severe visual or hearing impairment were screened using Geriatric Depression Scale-Sinhala version (GDS-S). Medical records were examined and diagnoses of non-communicable diseases were recorded;Results: The majority were females (n=183, 61%). The mean age was 62 (SD=8) years. Twenty nine percent of subjects were still working. Thirty six percent (males -40% and females -36%) had sought medical treatment for non-communicable diseases.Twenty five participants (10% of males , 7.% of females) met criteria for depression (GDS-S score >= 6). Nine percent of those who were aged 50-64 years and 7.4% of those who were older than 64 years were found to have depressive symptoms. Conclusions:One in 12 older adult showing depressive symptoms signals the need of professional attention to the mental health well-being of older adults. As one in three of these people already attend health care services for their medical problems, these services can provide assessment of depression to make appropriate referrals/ interventions.

Background Depression is a common disorder in old age and increases with hospitalisation. The aim was to investigate whether improvement in depressive symptoms after hospitalisation is associated with education level, age, gender, living situation, self‐efficacy, activities in daily living and quality of life by (1) examining the prevalence of depressive symptoms at baseline and at 1st and 2nd follow‐up (2) examining different factors’ association with depressive symptoms at baseline and (3) examining different factors’ association with improvement in depressive symptoms at baseline and at 1st and 2nd follow‐up. Methods The study consisted of 145 patients, 65 years and older. Data were collected between February 2015 and September 2016 through interviews conducted using structured protocols. The instrument used was Katz index of ADL, Geriatric Depression Scale‐20, Life Satisfaction Questionnaire and the General Self‐Efficacy Scale. The participants were interviewed before discharge from hospital, after 1.5 month and after 3 months. Results The prevalence of depressive symptoms in older persons was high after hospitalisation. Factors associated with improvement of depressive symptoms after hospitalisation were higher educational level, improvement in activities in daily living and quality of life. Non‐significant results were found for improvement of depressive symptoms and gender, age, living situation or self‐efficacy. Conclusions Depression is a common health problem in older persons, especially after hospitalisation. It is therefore important that healthcare staff screen older persons for depression during hospitalisation, as this allows identification of those in need and a possibility to help them in an appropriate manner. Persons with lower educational level and depressive symptoms need special attention.
