Depression among medical students in Alexandria, Egypt

Abstract: Background: Depression is a common illness worldwide with high rate among medical students. The objectives were to estimate the prevalence of depression among medical students in Alexandria, and identify its correlates. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used. “…For example, a 2018 study of 2562 students from Saudi Arabia using the PHQ9 instrument reported various levels of depressive symptoms in 66.6% of males and 87.6% of females, and nearly half (53.7%) showed symptoms of moderate severity and above (35). In another study from Egypt, 27.9% and 17.2% reported moderate and severe symptoms of depression, respectively (36).
