Depressed PHA transformation and acute leukemia in macroglobulinemia

Abstract: Two out of fifty-three patients with macroglobulinemia developed acute leukemia following chemotherapy. The Phytohemagglutinin (PHA) Transformation Index performed prior to the appearance of acute leukemia was found to be markedly depressed in these two patients in comparison with ten other patients with macroglobulinemia. In addition, a clone with monosomy 7 was detected in one of the currently reported patients when the leukemic process became apparent. The cytogenetic analysis was normal in the same patient… Show more

“…The development of acute myeloid leukemia in Waldenström's macroglobulinemia is very rare. A literature search revealed 16 such cases, including Majumdar's case [1] and other 13 cases his group reviewed [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. There was another case of acute myeloblastic leukemia and macroglobulinemia reported by Tangun et al in 1968 in Turkish [11], which was not included in Majumbar's review [1], and whether any alkylating agent was administered prior to the development of acute myeloblastic leukemia is unknown.…”

“…The concurrence of acute myeloid leukemia is very rare in cases of previously untreated Waldenström's macroglobulinemia. In 1993, Majumdar and Slater reported a case of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia terminating in acute myeloid leukemia [1], and reviewed 13 similar cases [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] as well, although they did not include another case reported by Tangun et al in 1968 [11]. Among those 15 cases, there were only two patients who had not received chemotherapy prior to the development of acute myeloid leukemia.…”

“…In the production of coal coke, a variety of toxic and harmful substances are emitted, such as coke oven emissions (COEs) and dust, and are accompanied by harmful factors, such as high temperature and noise, which can act on coke oven workers alone or jointly, thus damaging health 1 . Among these factors, COEs are the most concerning, as they are related to the occurrence of a variety of cancers, including lung cancer, leukemia, liver cancer, and skin cancer, among which the lung cancer of coke oven workers has been listed as an occupational tumor 2–5 . In addition to cancer, COEs may be related to the occurrence and development of other diseases, such as organic lesions of the nervous system, organic cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, various blood diseases, and severe skin diseases 6,7 .…”
