Abstract: El desmán ibérico, Galemys pyrenaicus (É.

“…According to the IUCN, major threats include water pollution, increased water extraction for irrigation, and habitat fragmentation due to the construction of hydroelectric plants and dams. In addition, predation by American mink ( Neovison vison ) might be affecting populations where this invasive species is abundant (Romero, ). Climate change is also anticipated to be a threat to the desman in the future and, given climate scenarios for the Iberian Peninsula, the distribution of the species and its habitat may experience significant decreases in the most vulnerable areas (Fernandes et al., ; Morueta‐Holme, Fløjgaard, & Svenning, ; Thomas, Griffiths, & Ormerod, ).…”

“…PCR and sequencing designed to amplify all mesocarnivorous from the Iberian Peninsula (Oliveira et al, 2010), proved beyond doubt that the American mink is a real threat to both micromammal species found. On the one hand, Lutra lutra (otter) and Neovison vison (American mink) are the main semi-aquatic carnivores declared to be predators of desman in the Iberian Peninsula (Romero, 2015), as detected by us using sequencing the IRBP gene. However, the American mink is the only one considered invasive of these two carnivorous species, which began to settle in the 1960s but today remains occupying a large part of the Iberian territory (Bravo, 2007), promoting mink eradication plans (RD 630/2013 Spanish Catalogue of Invasive Exotic Species).…”

“…To further support the last statement, data related to the presence of desman remains do not appear in the description of the usual diet of the American mink in the Central System so far (Bueno 1994(Bueno , 1996Morales et al, 2004Morales et al, , 2010; García-Díaz & Lizana 2013). However, out of Central System it is reported to be a frequent predator in rivers from Galicia (Northwestern Spain) (Romero, 2015). Other reports suggest that at several sites where the desman recently became extinct there, will be no signatures (Gisbert & García-Perea 2010a, 2010b.…”
