The present contribution displays a taxonomic and systematic revision of the exceptionally rich mollusk fauna of the Middle Miocene Lake Drniš, Southern Croatia. In total, 44 species of freshwater mollusks (36 freshwater gastropods, 8 bivalves) and 5 species of terrestrial gastropods are recorded. The assemblage is dominated by melanopsids and hydrobiids concerning number of species and individuals. Such a composition is typical among the coeval paleolakes of the Dinarides and is indicative of a perennial, moderately shallow setting. The fauna proves the highly endemic character of the Dinaride Lake System: 95.4 % of the freshwater species recorded for Lake Drniš only occur within this system. Moreover, the fauna shows a particularly strong relation-ship with that of nearby Lake Sinj (79.5 %). Only four freshwater species (9.1 %) are endemic to Lake Drniš. The present work ties the fauna to the stratigraphical framework established for the coeval Dinaride lakes Sinj, Kupres, and Gacko, and suggests an age of ca. 15.7-15.0 Ma, classifying the deposits into the early Middle Miocene (early Langhian).Among

The early Middle Miocene Lake Gacko was part of the Dinaride Lake System (DLS) and gave rise to a poorly known freshwater mollusk fauna. This was subject to malacological studies from the late 19th century onwards. Herein, we provide the first thorough taxonomic survey of Lake Gacko including revisions of several taxa. A total amount of 1,077 specimens was obtained from 17 samples, comprising at least 11 freshwater and 2 terrestrial gastropod species and 6 bivalve species. So far, none of the described taxa has been documented outside the Dinarides and the DLS, respectively. The fauna shows variable overlap with other paleolakes of the DLS, proofing once more the complex biogeographic patchwork of this system. The current paleoenvironmental reconstructions are tested and refined by application of a statistical analysis. This confirms the partition of the sedimentary history of Lake Gacko into three major depositional phases responding to astronomically forced climate changes. The low diverse mollusk assemblage in the initial phase, with abundant pulmonate and rissooid gastropods, signals a more arid climate with lowered lake level. During the second interval, the fauna becomes more diverse with common rissooid and melanopsid gastropods. It represents a more humid interval with enhanced precipitation and increased lake level, entailing the installation of a perennial lacustrine environment. The final phase is a return to arid conditions with the same elements as in the initial pulmonate‐rissooid assemblage. The sphaeriid Pisidium vukovici n. sp. is introduced as new species. This paper presents paleomagnetic results from the Miocene offshore Pag and the twin onshore (Drniš-Sinj) basins. Earlier magnetostratigrapic results were published from both basins, which documented that the lake sediments were good targets for paleomagnetism.From the Pag basin, we sampled the oldest and youngest segments of the 1200m long Crnika section and obtained statistically different paleomagnetic directions from the two parts.During a repeated visit to the section it was revealed that modern gravity-driven creeping can account for this, i.e. the results from the Pag basin should be rejected from regional tectonic interpretation.The overall-mean paleomagnetic direction for the Drniš-Sinj basin has excellent statistical parameters, its high quality is further supported by positive regional fold/tilt and reversal tests, based on seven geographically distributed localities. The results suggests 13-20° CCW rotation with respect to Africa and 21-27° with respect to stable Europe, during the last 15 million years. As the External Dinarides are the loci of a complicated network of Miocene and even younger tectonic zones, we can not export the observed rotation for the whole unit, but consider our results as one step in obtaining robust kinematic constraints for the post-Oligocene tectonic history of the External Dinarides.
