Deposition of Ru Adatoms on Pt Using Organometallic Chemistry:  Catalysts for Electrooxidation of MeOH and Adsorbed Carbon Monoxide

Abstract: Ru adatoms were deposited on black Pt gauze by hydrogenating Ru(COD)(η3-C3H5)2 (1, COD is 1,5-cyclooctadiene) over the gauze at low temperatures in hexanes solution under 1 atm of dihydrogen gas. A series of Pt−Ruad surfaces were prepared by interrupting the hydrogenation after deposition of 0.05, 0.10, 0.30, 0.32, 0.44, 0.70, and 3.5 equiv of Ru adatoms. The ratio of currents in the “double layer” to those in the “hydride” region in the potentiodynamic responses of these surfaces (0.5 M H2SO4, 25 °C, sweep ra… Show more

“…Different electrode systems, such as electrochemical deposited Ru on Pt, bulk PtRu alloys and electrodeposited PtRu alloys, have been investigated extensively [4][5][6][7][8][9]. These studies have demonstrated that the presence of Ru on the electrode surface catalyses the oxidation of CO species, and consequently, enhances the electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation and other fuels.…”

“…So far a variety of binary PtARu electrodes has been investigated: PtRu alloys [4,[6][7][8][9], Ru deposited onto polycrystalline Pt [10,11], RuAPt codeposits [12,13], as well as PtARu catalysts supported on carbon [14,15]. Apart from an electronic effect of Ru on the bond strengths of adsorbates on Pt surfaces [16][17][18][19], a bifunctional mechanism 0039-6028/$ -see front matter Ó 2005 Elsevier B.V. “…These alloys comprised Ru adatoms or Ru nanoparticles on either polycrystalline Pt [8,[13][14][15], or single crystal Pt electrodes [16][17][18][19][20], Pt-Ru nanoparticles [20,21] and carbonsupported Pt-Ru alloys derived from chemical and electrochemical codepositions [22][23][24][25][26][27]. In some cases, controlled amounts of Ru were deposited on Pt single crystals, either electrolytically or by electroless deposition [8,[16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…There have been a number of studies of Pt-Ru codeposits on various substrates, i. e, on glassy carbon [22][23][24][25], gold [33][34][35], and platinum [8,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]36]. They have been directed toward the catalytic characterization of these alloys, accompanied by relevant information on their composition, morphology and structure [11,[17][18][19][20]24,26,37,38].…”
