Dependences of Sma Mixture and Its Bituminous Binder Properties on Bitumen Batching System, Mixing Time and Temperature on Asphalt Mixing Plant

Abstract: Bitumen holds the aggregate in hot mix asphalt (HMA). Without asphalt binder, HMA would simply be crushed stone or gravel. A bitumen batching system (BBS) is comprised of bitumen storage, transportation, weighing and discharge equipment in an asphalt mixing plant (AMP). The function of the equipment is to batch the binder heated up to working temperature and to discharge it into a mixer in batches. In the entire system, the binder is exposed to high temperature and oxygen. Bitumen is slowly oxidized when it is… Show more

“…The tenth principle (failure to remove aged bitumen and/or some of the aggregate's fractions from the recycled asphalt mixture). The gradation of aggregates in an asphalt mixture complies with a certain optimal content of bituminous binder, which ensures its best properties [37]. When reclaimed asphalt is being recycled, the properties of aged bitumen are improved by admixing a rejuvenator or virgin bitumen, which always increases the content of summative bitumen and makes it not optimal.…”

“…To produce various HMA mixtures, bitumen of various marks is used, the physical properties of which differ; therefore, several tanks connected into one common system are usually mounted on each AMP. The Lithuanian Inventory of Road Asphalt Mixture Specifications TRA ASFALTAS 08 [29] states the regulations on various types of road and polymer-modified bitumen, which shall be complied with when selecting bitumen heating modes (Table 1) [30], [31]. Technological pipeline transport in an AMP is used to transport bitumen binder from a tanker to a tank, from one tank to another and from a tank to a batcher.…”

“…One of the most important characteristics of asphalt binders that must be addressed in test methods and specifications is that their precise properties almost always depend on their temperature (Bražiūnas et al 2013). If mixing temperature is inconstant the degree of compaction may vary, and this will inevitably result in poor performance of the newly laid road pavement (Shangguan, Al-Qadi 2015;Yiqiu et al 2014).…”
