In the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), the Route Control Centre System (RCCS) supervises the distance between consecutive trains and generates movement authorities, i.e. the permission for a train to move to a specific location within the constraints of the infrastructure and with supervision of speed. In this work, a control model aimed at determining the speed and position of a train platoon within a sector of the rail network is presented. The central controller, i.e. the RCCS, receives information about the current position and speed of trains and it sends them decisions about optimal corrective actions for each train. Priorities of trains are handled to respect the planned timetable, taking into account the train dynamics, limitations in divergences of positions, speeds, and tractive effort, as well as minimum distances between consecutive trains. The control approach is based on a quite innovative linear quadratic regulator allowing the definition of stochastic constraints. The validation of the model is based on data collected from a RCCS for a section of the high-speed Paris-London line.

This paper presents a novelty approach to usage of the fiber-optic phase-based sensor in railway transportation. We designed and tested the real deployment of this sensor working on the principle of light interferences within optical fibers. The proposed construction of the sensor allowed to increase the sensitivity and thanks to this can be detected and calculated individual axles and wheels of tram vehicles. We performed long-time period measurements (April to September 2019) in diverse climatic conditions, including measurements of 642 tram passages (several different construction types) in real urban traffic. The detection accuracy level was slightly above 99.4 %.

Wireless communication links tend to be employed more and more in safety-critical railway applications. Their safe use in an advanced train control system (TCS) is an issue that is addressed in this paper by characterizing the TCS service interruption due to communication errors. More precisely, occurrence probabilities of single errors are first discussed. Then, we obtain probabilistic analytical expressions of several temporal conditions that lead to a TCS service interruption, here a train emergency braking (the critical event). The accuracy of this analytical approach is proved when the results are compared with those given by a simulation approach with a Petri net model. Additionally, as the use case related to the "trains' separation" is considered in this paper, an analytical evaluation process is proposed to discuss the tolerated time margins that can be fixed to limit the critical-event occurrence probability due to the wireless communication errors.
