Torreya grandis seed oil, with a feature of Δ5-sciadonic acid (SA, 20:3 Δ5, 11,, is an attractive woody oil as its potential health benefits in lowering blood and hepatic lipids and anti-inflammatory properties. In the present study, its oxidative stabilities at both room temperature and heating conditions were investigated by analysing oxidation stability index (OSI), shelf-life, changes of fatty acids, acid value and peroxide value during stir-frying tests. Also, its effects on the sensory qualities of stir-fried shredded potatoes were evaluated. The OSI of T. grandis seed oil was 2.97 h at 120 °C, which was 11.24% higher than that of the control soybean oil, contributing to a longer predicted shelf-life of 135-195 d for T. grandis seed oil than 127-180 d for soybean oil. T. grandis seed oil also exhibited superior thermal stability compared to soybean oil. The feature fatty acid, SA, only lost 2.48-5.73% (decreasing from 14.14 to 13.33-13.79%) under the optimised stir-frying conditions at 140-180 °C for 3-5 min. For the stir-frying shredded potatoes, T. grandis seed oil made it more pleasing in colour, odour and palatability. Due to its desirable oxidative stability at room temperature and stir-frying performance at high temperature, T. grandis seed oil is suitable for use as a domestic cooking oil.

ObjectivesSunflower seeds provide tryptophan-rich proteins with the potential to protect against depression. Tryptophan is a precursor of serotonin and a substrate for the production of indole derivatives by gut microbiota. This study aimed to investigate the association between the depression-alleviating effects of deoiled and dechlorogenic sunflower seeds (DSFS) and regulation of gut microbiota.Materials and MethodsMale C57BL/6J mice were fed a diet comprising a source of soy protein (normal and model control), DSFS or whey protein concentrate (positive control) for 7 weeks, and chronic stress-induced depression was induced.ResultsFeeding the DSFS diet prevented depression-like behaviors, intestinal barrier damage, elevated plasma corticosterone, and reduced hippocampal serotonin levels in mice. Meanwhile, Feeding the DSFS diet significantly altered the gut microbiota structure, characterized by elevated relative abundances of Ileibacterium valens, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, Clostridium scindens, and Olsenella massiliensis, which were inversely associated with depressive behaviors and markers of mucosal barrier damage. DSFS also altered the gut metabolite profile, prevented depression-induced gut L-tryptophan depletion, and upregulated its metabolite indoleacetaldehyde.ConclusionFeeding the DSFS diet prevented depression in mice by remodeling the gut microbiota and bacterial tryptophan metabolism.

Swimming Exercise Modulates Gut Microbiota in CUMS-Induced Depressed Mice

Background Gut microbiota is associated with anxiety and depression, while exercise has been proved to alleviate depressive symptoms. However, the interaction of exercise, depression, and gut microbiota remains unclear. Methods Male C57/BL6J mice were exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 6 weeks and then were subjected to a 5-week swimming program. Behavioral tests, including sucrose preference test (SPT), open field test (OFT), elevated plus-maze (EPM) test, and tail suspension test (TST), were conducted to assess the anxiety-like and depressive behaviors. Gut microbiota analysis was carried out after sample collection. Results This study showed that CUMS induced depressive behaviors, but swimming exercise increased sucrose preference rate in the SPT, increased time in the center and number of rearing in the OFT, decreased time in the closed arm and increased time in the open arm in EPM, and decreased immobility time in the TST. Firmicutes were the predominant phylum in the gut microbiome, followed by the phyla Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. We further found that CUMS and swimming influenced the relative abundance of the genus Desulfovibrio, genus Streptococcus, genus p-75-a5. Among the metabolic pathways, aromatic biogenic amine degradation (PWY-7431), mono-trans and polycis decaprenyl phosphate biosynthesis (PWY-6383), chlorosalicylate degradation (PWY-6107), mycothiol biosynthesis (PWY1G-0), mycolyl-arabinogalactan-peptidoglycan complex biosynthesis (PWY-6397), toluene degradation I (aerobic) (via o-cresol) (PWY-5180), toluene degradation II (aerobic) (via 4-methylcatechol) (PWY-5182), and starch degradation III (PWY-6731) may be related to the mechanism of anti-depression effect. Conclusion Swimming exercise reverses CUMS-induced depressive behaviors, and the alteration of gut microbiota composition and regulation of microbiota metabolic pathways are involved.
