Denture cleansing--the best approach

Abstract: Denture cleanliness is essential to prevent malodour, poor aesthetics and the accumulation of plaque/calculus with its deleterious effects on the mucosa. There are a large number of solutions, pastes and powders available for cleaning dentures with a variety of claims for their relative efficacies. Denture cleansers in common use can broadly be divided into those having mechanical or chemical effects. Surveys show that some denture wearers experience difficulty in cleaning their dentures satisfactorily and man… Show more

“…Soft denture liners are widely used for denture treatment in addition to hard denture base resins. Soft denture liners are divided into two main categories: (1) long-term soft denture liners and (2) tissue conditioners (short-term soft denture liners) 5) , while long-term soft liners can be further divided into silicone-and acrylic resin-based, according to their composition. These longterm materials are comprised of cross-linked amorphous polymers and used in patients who cannot tolerate a conventional hard denture base to cushion functional forces 5) .…”

“…Denture plaque control using mechanical and chemical methods is essential for the maintenance of good oral hygiene of denture wearers [1][2][3] . Mechanical methods are comprised of brushing with water and ultrasonic treatment, while chemical methods utilize immersion in denture cleansers 2,4) .…”

“…Ideally, the combination of brushing and soaking method has been recommended as the effective way for cleaning dentures due to a better plaque control can be achieved. 28 In this study, almost all patients (98.3%) used brushing method for denture cleansing. The result found to be similar with previous studies by Peracini et al (100%) and Milward P et al (72.4%).…”

“…However, if used with an improper brushing technique, dentifrice can damage the prosthesis material due to the potential abrasive wear of the denture material. 24,28 In addition, brushing with toothpaste may make denture surface rougher, which increases the accumulation of dental plaque and reduces the shine of denture surfaces. 29 From the respond, 59.6% patient soaked their denture in water and the findings almost similar to the study by Baran and Nalcaci.…”

“…The abrasive action of polishing has been used to remove extrinsic stains on the surface of acrylic resin 9 , and it is considered a basic procedure for obtaining good aesthetics as well as smooth and polished surfaces 10 , facilitating the hygiene and comfort of users of removable dentures 11 . Alkaline peroxides could also contribute to stain removal by means of the mechanical action of the bubbles of oxygen resulting from the effervescent reaction of this product 12 …”
