Introducción: la Hepatitis B y el Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida (SIDA) son enfermedades virales de destaque en salud pública, debido a sus elevados índices epidemiológicos. La representación de ellas genera actitudes discriminatorias y prejuiciosas, principalmente en el acceso a servicios de salud. El objetivo es evaluar el conocimiento de las enfermedades y la existencia de actitudes discriminatorias de los académicos en odontología frente a la presencia del sida y Hepatitis B. Materiales y métodos: estudio exploratorio de corte transversal realizado en una facultad pública de odontología, con una muestra compuesta por 462 (88%) académicos que aceptaron participar de la investigación. Para recolectar los datos fue utilizado un cuestionario semiestructurado autoaplicable, creado para este estudio. Para analizar los datos se utilizó el test chi-cuadrado de proporciones, con nivel de significancia de 5%. Resultado: se verificó que, aunque la mayoría de los académicos a rma tener conocimiento sobre sida y Hepatitis B, apenas 58,9% y 55,8%, respectivamente, acertaron sus agentes etiológicos. Sobre las actitudes de los académicos frente al tratamiento odontológico de pacientes infectados por el Virus de Inmunodeficiencia Humana (VIH) y de la Hepatitis B (VHB) 85,3% y 91,8%, respectivamente, afirman atender; sin embargo, parte considerable de los alumnos piensa que existen diferencias en conductas clínicas a seguir. Conclusión: existen lagunas en el conocimiento de los graduados con relación al SIDA y la Hepatitis B. Las actitudes de los alumnos, en la atención odontológica de pacientes infectados, fueron consideradas discriminatorias, con mayor expresividad en el recelo en ser atendido por un profesional infectado, en lugar de tratar pacientes enfermos.

Introduction: Attitude is a relatively enduring organization of beliefs around an object, subject, or concept, which predisposes one to respond in some preferential manner. It decides one’s action. Dental students frequently come across underserved rural population and must have good attitudes toward them, so that the care delivered to them will be optimum. Aim: To assess the attitudes and practices of dental students in providing oral health-care services to underserved rural patients. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among final-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students, interns, and postgraduate students who are involved in providing dental care in dental institutions of Telangana State, India. A 15-item, self-structured, pretested questionnaire was administered. Descriptive statistics were calculated using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 20.0. Attitudes and practices of undergraduates and postgraduates were compared using paired t -test. Results: A total of 574 students participated in the study. Approximately 73.3% of the dental students agreed that they personally want to be involved in providing oral health care for the underserved and 27.1% students disagreed that underserved patients are subjects on whom they can train and expertise. Approximately 56.62% of dental students often asked patients about the expenses they bear for attending a single dental visit and 53.48% tried to minimize the number of appointments required for the patients. No significant difference was observed in attitudes between undergraduates and postgraduates. Conclusion: Dental students had moderate attitude toward underserved patients but this was not reflected in their practices.

In China, almost half (44%) of dentists agreed that saliva was a vehicle for the transmission of HIV and more than three‐quarters (86%) wore extra personal protective equipment when treating PLHIV (Lee, Fan, Starr, & Dogon, 2017). People living with HIV (PLHIV) continue to endure stigma and discrimination in the context of health care despite global improvements in health outcomes. HIV stigma persists within healthcare settings, including dental settings, manifesting itself in myriad, intersecting ways, and has been shown to be damaging in the healthcare setting. Stigmatising practices may include excessive personal protective equipment, delaying the provision of care or unnecessary referral of PLHIV to specialist services in order to access care. The workshop entitled “HIV and Stigma in the Healthcare Setting” provided an overview of the concept and manifestation of HIV stigma and explored the disproportionate burden it places on groups that face additional disadvantages in accessing care. The final part of the workshop concluded with a review of institutional and community‐based interventions that worked to reduce HIV stigma and group discussion of the ways in which these strategies might be adapted to the dental workforce.
