Dentine hypersensitivity and dentine exposure in Arab patient populations

Abstract: Background Dentine hypersensitivity is a frequent oral complaint that is usually associated with several factors including diet and oral hygiene practices. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence, severity and correlates of dentine hypersensitivity and dentine exposure‐related risk indicators in a sample from six Arab countries. Methods A multinational cross‐sectional study was conducted on a sample of 2924 participants, attending dental practices, aged 18‐35 years from six Arab countries.… Show more

“…Hamasha et al (2019) concluded that 33% of the study sample suffered from DH with sensitivity in an average of 4.8 teeth per person [ 12 ]. Similarly, a multinational study conducted across six Arab countries observed relatively high levels of dentine hypersensitivity (30% across all participants) and dentine exposure (45.5%) [ 13 ]. These studies indicate that within the region where this research was conducted, the prevalence of DH is on the rise, and there is a need for more research on effective management strategies and products in the treatment of DH.…”

“…Dentin sensitivity rises with age, according to two studies including people aged 12–20 and 18–35 [ 3 , 52 ]. Several studies found a greater incidence rate in the ages 36–45, 40–49, and 50–59 [ 53 – 55 ].…”

“…Yet, a number of studies investigating the prevalence of DH in the Arabic world suggest that it is a common complaint amongst the general population and in patients at the dental clinic. [20][21][22] In addition, the Chinese study was the first to also conduct an exploratory factorial analysis for DHEQ-15; the results of which suggested three-factor subscales: 'restrictions' (three items), 'changes in eating habits' (6 items) and 'emotions and identity' (six items). To validate this three-factor model of DHEQ-15 for future use, a confirmatory factor analysis is now required.…”
