ObjectivesIndia is unique in entire world due to variety of dietary habits in population. Many people of India follow totally vegetarian life style through their entire life time due to some religious and cultural reasons. Present study tried to analyze the role of different factors in the occurrence of dental caries including dietary habit.MethodsPersons suffering with dental caries were examined for the type of dental caries in relation to different factors. Dental examination was performed and patients were asked a questionnaire and the data was recorded and analyzed.ResultsIncidence of dental caries was higher in female. High number of dental caries patients was observed among vegetarian population. 21–30 year age group was found to be most infected with dental caries.ConclusionsThis study can be helpful to analyze respective role of different dietary factors including protein rich diet, age, gender etc. on the prevalence of dental caries, which can be helpful to counteract the potential increase in the cases of dental caries and to design and plan preventive strategies for the persons at greatest risk.

To review the previous preventive measures against the incidence of dental caries in children, we started to examine the state of dental health in children at the age of 18 months. The annual dental examination continued up to 12 years of age (sixgraders). Enrolled in this study were a total of 225 children living in a Town T and born between 1980 and 1982.Meanwhile, we made surveys in order to gauge the degree to which the subjects and their parents have concern for oral health. The findings and their relationships to the caries incidence were analyzed using an epidemiological technique. The annual dental examinations revealed that in primary dentition the incidence of caries tends to increase in 3·year-olds while in permanent dentition the carious process extends in 4-6 graders.By kind of teeth, primary molars accounted for 52% of the affected deciduous teeth. First molars made up 72% of all the decayed permanent teeth.Using the two caries cumulative indexes developed by our department for recording the prevalence and severity of tooth decay in the deciduous dentition and in the permanent dentition, respectively, we found that there is a correlation between the incidence of caries in the deciduous dentition and that in the permanent teeth.The two formulae are based on the cumulative number of decayed teeth that appeared in the deciduous dentition and permanent dentition for a given period of time.In order to find whether there is any correlation between caries attack and attention paid to the risk factors, we divided the subjects into two groups by the number of decayed teeth per person. In the group made up of those with many carious teeth, it was noted that between-meal snacks are most likely to produce caries in deciduous teeth, while lifestyle affects permanentteeth.

The report presents findings from a survey, conducted in early 1969, of the teaching of the principles of epidemiology at 20 schools of dentistry in the United States. The report includes information about tbe expectations dental students had of instruction in the subject. Students from six schools also supplied evaluative information about instruction received. Dental students anticipating instruction in epidemiology and dental students wbo received instruction in epidemiology considered tbe subject to be relevant to their education. However, six of 13 classes which received instruction in epidemiblogy rated the instruction as somewhat boring and ineffective. The report concludes with a few suggestions about possible ways to remedy tbe observed weaknesses in the teaching of epidemiology to dental students.' ".. "• -.• • . 1
