Background: In today’s world of digital dentistry, dental photography plays an important role as multilevel significance and represents the synonym of contemporary dentistry. Thus, we aimed at evaluating the acquaintance of practice, opportunity and morals of dental photography in everyday practice among undergraduate dental students. Design and Methods: The current research was an observational cross-sectional study. Total 233 students participated; each was given questionnaire consisted of three parts covering the following aspects: questions 1 to 3 on the practice of dental photography, questions 4 to 7 on morals in dental photography and question 8 to 11 on opportunities of dental photography. The answers were tabulated and statistically analysed and association with the factors were tested for significance using Chi-square tests, and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results: The total response rate was 86%. Among the 201 respondents, 100 were males and 101 females; 96% male students were taking photographs and 93% females were taking photographs, on regular basis. Phone cameras (41.3%) were the most commonly used device followed by DSLR cameras. Surveyed students mentioned patient education (53.2%) as most needed requirement for taking photographs, followed by treatment planning (49.8%) and monitoring of the treatment outcome (34.3%). Ninety-one percent of students feel that there is an opportunity for advancement in dental photography techniques. Conclusions: The participants aware of dental photography, but they require detail insight on proper capturing of photographs and morals, with regards to confidentiality of the patient and patient consent.

Latar belakang: Salah satu bentuk penerapan “digital dentistry” adalah fotografi dental, yaitu sebuah pencitraan biomedik yang dapat merepresentasikan gambaran rongga mulut seperti keadaan aslinya. Fotografi dental merupakan hal yang sangat esensial karena dapat diterapkan dalam aspek berikut, seperti rekam medis, medicolegal, odontologi forensik, pemeriksaan, penegakan diagnosis dan rencana perawatan, edukasi (bagi mahasiswa dan pasien), publikasi ilmiah (penelitian dan studi kasus), dan komunikasi (dokter gigi, perawat, tekniker, dan pasien). Tujuan: Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui gambaran pengetahuan dan sikap mahasiswa program profesi fakultas kedokteran gigi (FKG) tentang fotografi dental. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan metode cross-sectional dengan melibatkan 197 mahasiswa program profesi FKG yang tersebar di DKI Jakarta, meliputi Universitas Trisakti, Universitas Prof. Dr. Moestopo (Beragama), Universitas Yarsi, dan Universitas Indonesia. Kuesioner (google form) berjumlah 29 pertanyaan, yang terdiri atas 14 pertanyaan pengetahuan dan 15 pernyataan sikap. Aspek pengetahuan dan sikap dikategorikan sebagai berikut: baik, cukup, dan kurang. Hasil: Sebanyak 66% mahasiswa memiliki pengetahuan yang baik terhadap fotografi dental, diikuti oleh 27% mahasiswa dengan pengetahuan cukup, dan 7% mahasiswa dengan pengetahuan kurang. Kemudian, mayoritas mahasiswa memiliki sikap baik (96%) terhadap fotografi dental. Kesimpulan Sebagian besar mahasiswa program profesi fakultas kedokteran gigi di DKI Jakarta memiliki tingkat pengetahuan dan sikap yang baik tentang fotografi dental. Untuk memaksimalkan penerapan fotografi dental dalam kegiatan klinik, fotografi dental perlu diintegrasikan dalam kurikulum kedokteran gigi.

Objective: Dental photography is used for such purposes as the evaluation of treatment process, providing patients with information and motivating them, education/academic activities, and medico-legal recording. To investigate the prevalence of dental photography use and the experiences and attitudes of dentists with different demographic characteristics towards dental photography. Methods: An online survey consisting of three parts as, which are demographic characteristics (age, sex, professional experience, institution of employment, and professional qualification), experiences, and attitudes of dentists towards dental photography, was prepared. A link of the survey was randomly sent to dentists by researchers. Descriptive statistical analysis and Chi-square tests were used. Results: A total of 444 volunteer participants (female:56.8%; male:43.2%) were included in the study. Dental photography was seen to be used by 66.7% of the participants. The prevalence of dental photography use was higher in specialist dentists than in general dental practitioners. A statistically significant difference was found between the demographic characteristics and purpose of using dental photography and the considered receiving training on dental photography. Conclusion: The prevalence of dental photography use was 66.7%. The experiences and attitudes of dentists towards dental photography can be diverse according to demographic characteristics.
