Dental hypomineralization treatment: A systematic review

Abstract: Introduction Defects in the maturation stage of amelogenesis result in a normal volume of enamel but insufficient mineralization, called hypomineralization. Molar‐incisor hypomineralization (MIH), amelogenesis imperfecta and dental fluorosis (DF) are examples of such defects. Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments applied to the different forms of dental hypomineralization. Materials and Methods PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase were screened. The research was limi… Show more

“…Treatment modalities for teeth with MIH can range from prevention, restoration and even extraction. Long-term treatment concepts have included desensitizing and demineralizing products, resin in ltration, sealants, micro-abrasion, composites, veneers and crowns (11).…”

“…A study in northern England, in fluoridated and nonfluoridated communities, found that children from high-income families were more likely to have MIH than children in quintiles with greater deprivation; no association was observed from the exposure to fluoridated water (Balmer, Toumba, Godson, & Duggal, 2012). In contrast, a study in Brazil found that children from schools in rural areas were more likely to have MIH than were their counterparts in urban areas (da Costa- Silva et al, 2010). More studies are required to investigate the association of socioeconomic conditions and occurrence of MIH.…”

“…Higher MIH severity is associated with higher prevalence of dental caries (Gurrusquieta et al, ). Severely affected MIH teeth are difficult to treat as the child may experience hypersensitivity, and it may be difficult to obtain analgesia (da Cunha Coelho et al, ). In addition, the restoration of the tooth may be technically challenging due to the likelihood of enamel breakdown.…”

“…Minimal intervention, whenever possible, is preferred in children, as this is more easily accepted and leads to greater quality of life (Lundgren et al 2015 ; Hasmun et al 2018 ). Vital bleaching is a minimally invasive treatment, with few side effects, that is effective in improving aesthetics for most patients with enamel and dentine discolouration (Nathwani and Kelleher 2010 ; Bidra and Uribe 2011 ; Di Giovanni et al 2018 ; da Cunha Coelho et al 2019 ).…”
