Dental Erosion and Dentin Hypersensitivity among Adult Asthmatics and Non-asthmatics Hospital-based: A Preliminary Study

Abstract: Background:Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the airways leading to spasm and swelling of the airways. The medications taken for the treatment of asthma can result in dental erosion and dentin hypersensitivity. Objectives:The aims of this study were to investigate the severity of dental erosion amongst adult asthmatics according to: gender, type and duration of medication taken and to compare dental erosion and dentin hypersensitivity between asthmatics and non-asthmatics.Subjects and Methods… Show more

“…Not all studies included all the confounding factors mentioned above. Two studies [ 12 , 22 ] however did not clearly mention the confounders they considered in their patients. Two studies demonstrated that 100% of the participants in the asthmatic and non-asthmatic groups had dental erosion[ 14 , 19 ].…”

“…68 In another study conducted by Farag and Awooda, 40 asthmatic patients who presented to an emergency department and were diagnosed with an acute asthmatic attack were monitored for DH and dental erosions. 69 The authors found significantly more DH in the asthmatic patients compared to the non-asthmatic patients. Studies have shown that the use of inhalers in asthmatic patients decreases salivary flow and salivary composition, which in turn reduces the buffering effect of saliva that protects tooth structures from erosion.…”

“…There is no clear difference, however, in the degree of tooth erosion noticed using the two different way of drug administration. This could demonstrate the importance of GOR and other concomitant factors including lifestyle and oral hygiene in determining dental erosion [ 30 ].…”

“…A statistically significant relationship (p = 0.05) between the intake of carbonated beverages, isotonic drinks and fruit juices and a higher BEWE was detected. Furthermore, regarding the use of drugs that could be potentially erosive, a statistically significant correlation (p = 0.006) was shown with the BEWE index in patients using inhalers (5.3% of the total) [ 30 ].…”
