Dental Caries Status, Socio-Economic, Behavioral and Biological Variables among 12-Year-Old Palestinian School Children

Abstract: According to a linear logistic regression model, children learning in lower SEP schools, with higher SM levels and more acidic saliva, had a higher chance of experiencing dental caries. These findings should be considered in the planning of services and dental health care programs for Palestinian children.

“…The DMFT index as shown in (Table 2) was (1.8±0.08), which is lower than the results reported by previous investigations in a different cities of Libya, in Benghazi [8,9] , Sebah [12] and Tripoli [3,10] . However, it was lower than the finding in other countries reported such as Iran [2,13] and in Palestinian [26] . This may be due to cultural, ethnic, and geographical differences and oral hygiene habit.…”

“…This result highlights the importance of the school level in predicting untreated dental caries. A previous Palestinian study demonstrated that 12-year-old school children studying in a lower SES area had a higher probability of experiencing dental caries [Sgan-Cohen et al, 2015]. It is essential to state that oral health topics are not formal components of adolescents' curricula in Brazil.…”

“…The most recent review for obvious caries experience was reported in deciduous teeth (dmft) in the Arabic region, exceeding a score of 8 in some countries. In the Palestinian Territories, the prevalence of dental caries in children is high (65.5%), and children in this country are exposed to higher risk of this disease (DMFT = 1.98) compared with neighbouring Israeli children (DMFT = 1.66). Approximately three‐quarters of Syrian children experience high ECC (dmft = 4.25), and this was significantly associated with bottle‐feeding during infancy and toddlerhood.…”
