Dental Caries Indices used for Detection, Diagnosis, and Assessment of Dental Caries

Abstract: Background: Due to increasing problem of oral health diseases worldwide, there is urgent need of comprehensive data collection system. Traditionally, carious lesions were detected and evaluated using physical criteria that consist of size, depth, and existence or absence of cavitations. Untreated caries in children were increasing like epidemic and there is an urgent need to determine a system that can assess initiation of dental caries to advanced stages so as to determine the disease diagnosis and decide on … Show more

“…The prevalence of dental caries can be assessed using decayed-missing-filling (dmft) or DMFT. DMFT/dmft index was the easiest, simplest, reliable, valid, commonly used for oral health assessment [19]. This study hypothesized high dental caries prevalence in CLWPHA increased due to low CD4 + counts.…”

“…Unlike the DMFT index, the PUFA index may be used to track the progression of untreated caries lesions, which can lead to better outcomes. However, the PUFA index, like the ICDAS, has a weakness in that it focuses on cavitated caries without considering less severe cases [ 6 ].…”

“…A condição de saúde bucal pode ser diagnosticada clinicamente pelo CPOD, aceito internacionalmente como indicador objetivo do perfil da saúde bucal e indica a prevalência de cárie dental no indivíduo (ou em uma determinada população estudada) a partir da quantidade de dentes cariados (C), perdidos (P) e obturados (O) (DOIFODE et al, 2018).…”
