The purpose of the present study was to assess periodontal destruction and related etiological factors in three young adult male populations in the U.S.A., Norway, and Sri Lanka. The clinical examination included the Plaque Index (Silness & Loe 1964), Retention Index for calculus, defective fillings, and gingival caries (Loe 1967), Gingival Index (Loe & Silness 1963), and Loss of Attachment (Ramfjord 1959).Plaque accumulation, calculus deposition, and gingival inflammation were higher in interproximal than buccal areas. Plaque and Gingival Index scores remained constant over the entire age range in each population. The filling experience was high in Norway compared to the U.S.A. and Sri Lankan populations where few defective fillings were found. Caries related to the gingival margin were rare in all three populations. Loss of attachment increased with age and was greater on buccal surfaces than mesial surfaces. The distribution of attachment loss was similar in the three populations, and the greatest attachment loss involved maxillary first molars, maxillary and mandibular first premolars, and mandibular incisors. Rates of attachment loss in these young populations were low, averaging less than 0.06 mm per year.

Comparison of Salivary Peroxidase System Components in Caries-Free and Caries-Active Naval Recruits

Measurements of flow rate, pH, hypothiocyanite, thiocyanate, and salivary peroxidase activity were made for unstimulated (drooled) whole saliva samples from 29 caries-free and 29 caries-active naval recruits. No significant differences were found between the two groups of subjects for any of these variables. Thus, single point measurements of static properties of saliva do not reveal significant correlations between caries incidence and concentrations of salivary peroxidase system components. However, the results did provide strong support for the concept that the salivary peroxidase system is active in vivo. Statistical analyses showed significant negative correlations for hypothiocyanite with salivary peroxidase activity. These correlations are consistent with in vitro biochemical studies which show that the generation of hypothiocyanite in saliva is associated with a decrease in enzyme activity. Furthermore, smokers had significantly elevated thiocyanate and hypothiocyanite compared to nonsmokers. These elevations are also consistent with in vitro studies which show that when the salivary peroxidase system is activated additional supplements of thiocyanate produce increased generation of hypothiocyanite.

The aim of this study was to determine the periodontal status in relation to the quality of the adjacent proximal tooth surface. The gingival index (GI) and probable pocket depth (PD) were measured in 144 contra-lateral pairs of sound vs. restored and 95 contra-lateral pairs of sound vs. carious surfaces in 124 patients. The restorations studied were silver amalgams and tooth-coloured filling materials, the margins of which were supragingival or level with the gingival margins. The results showed that the GI and PD were greater for both restored and carious tooth surfaces than for the contra-lateral sound surfaces. When all the teeth were grouped together, the differences in the mean values of GI and PD were statistically significant at the P less than or equal to 0.05 level. A comparison between restored and carious (non-paired) tooth surfaces revealed higher mean values of GI and PD for the latter, which were highly significant at the P less than 0.001 level. Thus the present study shows that proximal tooth surface quality influences the health status of the adjacent periodontium.
