Objectives: Given the controversy in the literature about the variations in intercanine and intermolar distances and arch perimeter once the eruption of permanent teeth is completed, the aims of this study were to assess the changes of these measures with age, analyzing its sexual dimorphism and variability in a Spanish population. Study Design: 188 Spanish individuals distributed in three age groups were selected: 63 adolescents (mean age: 14.15 years), 62 young adults (mean age: 21.9 years) and 63 adults (mean age: 40 years). The intercanine and intermolar distances and arch perimeter were measured in each dental cast from each individual of the sample using a digital method. The results were compared between sex and age groups, the sexual dimorphism percentage (%) of each measure and its variability coefficient (VC%) were calculated. Results: The results depend on sex and age and, therefore, these two factors will be analyzed jointly for each of them with the variation coefficient of the measurement. Intercanine and intermolar distances and arch perimeter were greater in men than in women, especially in the young adult and adult groups. Conclusions: The intercanine distance and arch perimeter tended to decrease with age particularly in the female sex, whilst the intermolar distance didn't undergo significant changes. The intercanine distance is the dimension that presented the greatest variability, whereas the intermolar distance presented the least. The changes occur in the transition from adolescence (14 years of age) to adulthood (22 years of age) and the subsequent alterations are not relevant.

Objective: To quantify the nature and extent of bilateral dentoalveolar asymmetries in routine adolescent orthodontic patients. Materials and Methods: Eight left-right pairs of occlusal dimensions were measured from dental casts (n ϭ 211 subjects) with proportionate samples of class I, II, and III malocclusions. Results: Directional asymmetry is a subtle, but pervasive feature of the dental arches, with systematically larger dimensions on the left side. Prior studies attribute this sidedness to compensations for hemispheric laterality. Patient's sex did not influence the magnitude of asymmetry, but patients with class II malocclusion exhibited significantly greater asymmetries, particularly in the anterior segment. Inspection suggests that this is attributable to the lack of coupling and guidance of the teeth between the jaws. There is a significant association between the severity of class II buccal-segment relationship and the extent of left-right asymmetries. Conclusion: Clinically, these lateralities need to be anticipated, particularly in class II malocclusions, and incorporated into the treatment plan.

Objetivo: identificar alterações dimensionais nos arcos dentários superior e inferior na má oclusão Classe II, divisão 1, com deficiência mandibular (Padrão esquelético II). Métodos: 48 pacientes com má oclusão Classe II, igualmente divididos quanto ao gênero, foram comparados com 51 indivíduos com oclusão normal, sendo 22 do gênero masculino e 29 do gênero feminino. Todos os 99 indivíduos estavam no estágio de dentadura permanente, com os segundos molares permanentes irrompidos ou em irrupção, com idade média de 12 anos e 5 meses (desvio-padrão de 1 ano e 3 meses), numa faixa etária oscilando entre 11 anos e 4 meses e 20 anos. Conclusão: os resultados permitem concluir que, na má oclusão Classe II, divisão 1 com deficiência mandibular, o arco dentário superior encontra-se alterado, mostrando-se atrésico e mais longo, enquanto o arco dentário inferior é pouco influenciado pela discrepância sagital de Classe II. Resumo INTRODUÇÃO e RevIsÃO De lITeRaTURaÉ difícil determinar a incidência da má oclusão Classe II na população mundial com base na literatura disponível, uma vez que os critérios metodoló-gicos empregados, bem como a formação dos pesquisadores, variam muito entre os diversos estudos, além das possíveis interferências étnicas. Para se ter ideia, a incidência de má oclusão Classe II, divisão 1, na literatura oscila entre 8,6% 3 e 33,7% 12. O mesmo ocorre para a divisão 2, cuja epidemiologia estendese de 0,6% 3 a 6,7% 17. Uma análise oclusal criteriosa feita por ortodontistas revelou que, no Brasil, a má oclusão Classe II alcança uma porcentagem de quase 50% das más oclusões nas dentaduras decídua 24 e mista 25 , levando em consideração a chave de caninos decíduos ou de pré-molares, na dependência do estágio do desenvolvimento da oclusão.A má oclusão Classe II refere-se a um erro sagital entre os arcos dentários e pode manifestar-se em faces normais (Padrão esquelético I) e em faces com deficiência mandibular (Padrão esquelético II). De acordo com a análise facial, em torno de 15% da população escolar de Bauru/SP no estágio de dentadura mista manifesta discrepâncias esqueléticas acompanhando a Classe II, das quais 11,5% apresentam características peculiares da divisão 1, enquanto os 3,5% apresentam características da divisão 2 25. Em síntese, a má oclusão Classe II é frequente na população e manifesta-se tanto em Padrão esquelético I quanto em Padrão esquelético II (Fig. 1).
