Density of microvessels positive for CD105 (endoglin) is related to prognosis in meningiomas

Abstract: Microvessel density (MVD) is considered to be a prognostic marker in many tumours. Nevertheless, conflicting results were achieved regarding its prognostic role in meningiomas when it was quantified through pan-endothelial markers such as CD34, CD31 or Factor VIII. In the present study, MVD was assessed in meningiomas through the specific marker for neo-angiogenesis CD105. Fifty-four formalin fixed, paraffin embedded, surgical cases of meningiomas (WHO 28 grade I and 26 grade II) as well as ten normal leptomen… Show more

“…Mean microvessel density has been correlated with risk of metastasis, prediction of efficacy of anticancer therapy, and prognosis in a variety of tumour types (Des Guetz et al, 2006;Gadducci et al, 2006;Zhao et al, 2006;Barresi et al, 2007;Calvin et al, 2007;Gulubova and Vlaykova, 2007;Kavantzas et al, 2007;Trivella et al, 2007). The PCI results agree with Eberhard's data (Eberhard et al, 2000).…”

“…[36][37][38] CD105 expression on endothelial cells is related to tumor progression in squamous cell carcinoma, 16 glioblastomas, 15 and meningiomas. 14 It correlates with survival in primary central nervous system lymphomas. 17 In our study using immunostainings and laser-microdissection combined with molecular analyses, we demonstrate that in angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, only CD34 þ CD105 þ neoangiogenic endothelial cells expressed BCL2.…”

“…13 In meningiomas, glioblastomas, and squamous cell carcinoma, CD105 expression on endothelial cells is related to neoangiogenesis and to tumor progression. [14][15][16] CD105 is also expressed by endothelial cells in the primary central nervous system lymphomas and correlates with survival. 17 Here, we studied BCL2 and VEGFA expression in neoangiogenic endothelial cells and lymphoma cells in angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.…”

As a general rule, the Ki-67 proliferation index correlates well with WHO tumor grade for meningioma.…”
