Density Measurements of Endothermic Hydrocarbon Fuel at Sub- and Supercritical Conditions

Abstract: The density of a typical endothermic hydrocarbon fuel (RP-3) at sub- and supercritical conditions is measured using a novel density measurement method which is based on mass conservation equation and can be applied to the density measurement of single phase flow including supercritical fluids. The measurement covers the temperature range of (295 to 796) K under pressures from (0.1 to 5) MPa. The uncertainty of the measurement is within ± 0.635 % according to error analysis. The results are fitted as polynomial… Show more

“…In our previous works [27][28][29][30][31][32], the thermophysical and transport properties of kerosene RP-3, such as the density, dynamic viscosity and specific heat capacity, were measured experimentally as the first part of this series research work [27][28][29][30]. For the second part, Zhang et al [31] investigated the heat transfer characteristics of RP-3 flowing through vertically downward miniature tubes experimentally on the basis of RP-3's measured thermophysical properties.…”

“…The maximum and average deviations are 16.5% and 3.0%, respectively. As the system pressure 3 MPa is closer to the critical pressure, the density decrease slope during the section of critical point is steeper than that of other experimental pressures [45]. Fuel density distribution in helical tubes is complicated in the range of critical point and average density definition in equation (5) can generate large deviation for the 3 MPa system pressure condition.…”

“…The density data under various system pressures have been experimentally measured in previous literature [45]. Moreover, the acceleration pressure drop can be solved using the conservatory of momentum under the cylindrical coordinate system.…”

“…In this paper, a ten-species surrogate [6] is used to evaluate the viscosity of RP3 at 3 Mpa with NIST Supertrapp software [17]. Other properties, including specific heat, density, and thermal conductivity, are obtained from existing experimental data [18][19][20]. Figure 2 shows the thermophysical property variations of RP3 at 3 Mpa.…”
