Density, abundance, survival, and ranging patterns of common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Mississippi Sound following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

Abstract: After the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill began in April 2010, studies were initiated on northern Gulf of Mexico common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Mississippi Sound (MSS) to determine density, abundance, and survival, during and after the oil spill, and to compare these results to previous research in this region. Seasonal boat-based photo-identification surveys (2010–2012) were conducted in a section of MSS to estimate dolphin density and survival, and satellite-linked telemetry (2013) was … Show more

“…Both of these factors should be taken into account in order to interpret and contextualize the data from that population. No such pervasive health challenges have been suggested for the other wild population (Mattson et al 2006) during the time period discussed here (although several years after these data the Deepwater Horizon oil spill undoubtedly impacted the survival of wild dolphins in that area; Mullin et al 2017).…”

“…Recently, much attention has been given to assessing the status of bottlenose dolphin populations in bays, sounds, and estuaries [13, 13, 73, 86]. Measuring abundance and demography of these populations is often difficult due to uncertainty about population boundaries [2, 13, 73, 86]. This study is the first to implement a Robust Design capture-recapture design to estimate bottlenose dolphin abundance in the Indian River Lagoon estuary.…”
